The players: Director: Michel Gondry, Writer: Michel Gondry, Cast: Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover, Mia Farrow, Melonie Diaz
Facts of interest: Michel Gondry also wrote and directed “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”
The plot: Jerry (Jack Black) becomes magnetized after a plant sabotage gone wrong, and accidentally erases all the tapes at his friend's (Mos Def) video store. In an attempt to save the business, the two begin replacing the ruined tapes by filming their own versions of the feature films.
Our quick thoughts: While select aspects of "Be Kind Rewind" are quite ridiculous, the film is still imaginative, hilarious and touching. Jack Black and Mos Def have good chemistry, appropriately portraying the friendship between their zany characters. The tensions between the two fuel many of the laughs (some carrying funny, while innocent racial undertones) as they undertake their quest of amateur filmmaking.
The film also comprises important messages touching on the definition and importance of community and identity. Even though the plot (and sometimes acting) feels exaggerated at times, the film suceeds in offering its audience a solid dose of amazing goofiness. Maintaining a sense of purpose and meaning, "Be Kind Rewind" entertains with outrageous remakes of classic films and a hilarious portrayal of small-town life and dreams.
Freaky quote: "To movies with heart and soul." – Mia Farrow
The final word: Although not flawless, “Be Kind Rewind” is a quirky, heartfelt comedy that is not only hilarious, but carries a sophisticated message. Be kind, go see it!
