Nolan talks 'Dark Knight' sequel plans
Christopher Nolan hasn't talked that much about "The Dark Knight" since the film's release and its box office glory, but with the release of the DVD imminent, it's time for the director to resurface.
Those who can't wait for a sequel to "The Dark Knight" may have to wait a while, however. Talking to USA Today, Nolan said he's playing aroung with a few story ideas, but he hasn't come up with anything concrete or utterly satisfying quite yet.
"It was obvious when the box office was so big ($530 million domestically) that we had underestimated how ready fans were to reboot the franchise," Nolan told USA Today. "The worst thing you could do now that you've gotten the plane back in the air is mess up the landing."
And he's darn right. I absolutely adored "The Dark Knight" and would love to see another Batman installment, but just like Nolan, I want it to be perfect. That takes time, however, and I can only hope Warner Bros. doesn't screw it up by wanting to push a third flick as soon as possible.

"You won't kill me out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousnes...and I won't kill you because you're too much fun. We're going to do this forever."
Just get Daniel Day Lewis to be the Joker. Maybe the only person on the planet with the talent and devotion necessary, who's capable of being more menacing than the Joker, visually, physically, and emotionally, and with profound and genuine respect for his predecessor
I agree. I would rather not see a third Batman movie than see a lesser Batman movie. My wife and I had initially thought, given how great "The Dark Knight" turned out to be, and with the unfortunate passing of Heath Ledger and leaving the Joker's story open ended, that a third film should not be made.
On the other hand, Christopher Nolan (and let's not forget his brother Jonathan and story writer David S. Goyer, should they be further involved) is a true craftsman, and I believe that he will only deliver the best film possible, so if it's going to happen, it will when he is ready. And I do hope that Warner Bros. realizes this, too.
There has been talk of Johnny Depp being considered for The Riddler, but I don't know if that would work. For one, and with no disrespect to Mr. Depp, his acting style has always been fantastical, even in more seriously grounded fare, so I wonder how a Johnny Depp interpretation of The Riddler would fit into this real world that Mr. Nolan and company have already established so well. Plus, to follow The Joker with The Riddler seems a bit anticlimactic anyway. Who else could do it? What other villains or actors could possibly come close to the force of sheer anarchy demonstrated by Heath Ledger?
I just think that if a third film comes to fruition, The Joker's story should remain open-ended and in so doing not be revisited by any actor, because those are enormous shoes to fill.
Daniel Day Lewis as the Joker......... wow!! I saw Gangs of New York, he was / is Brilliant He is simply one of the best!
Daniel Day-Lewis as The Joker? Come on! You gotta be kidding me. I mean, yeah, he's a good actor and all, but there's a little problem called an age difference. Besides, I don't think DDL would do it anyway. He dedicated an award he won for There Will Be Blood to Heath Ledger, so I don't think he'd be so quick to replace him out of respect.
Honestly replacing Heath would not be as hard as many think! YES, his acting was flawless but his real talent is seen through "The Joker" that he created! the voice, the laugh, the twisted mind, the lip licking...i mean really Heath has already done all the hard work...now its just finding a colorful and talented enough actor to step in to role Heath already created!
honestly i think if johnny depp was to be involved with this third installment...he should be given a shot at doing The Joker! like someone stated before me...his acting his "fantastical" and i think he could pull of Heath's Joker!
but my real pick for a Joker replacement would be Ben Foster!
I have to agree that Johnny Depp wouldn't be right for the role of the Riddler. Don't misunderstand me, he's my all time favorite actor, but I have to agree with Zach Hammill. His roles that he plays, and in particular, thrives in have all been fantastical.
One thing I would like to see happen with the RIddler if he is going to be in the movie, is see him take more of a menacing characteristic, like the character of Jigsaw in the Saw movies. Where he puts people into situations and puzzles where they have to figure out a riddle in order to survive. I think that would be perfect for the type of film making christopher nolan does to begin with, and I could see that being a way that he could place the batman franchise onto a whole new plateau. Obviously he would have to dummy down the blood and gore to keep a PG-13 rating. but could still have the psychological pull on the film.
