Viggo Mortensen talks 'The Road' release delay

Back in October, we learned John Hillcoat's new movie "The Road," which is based on Cormac McCarthy's novel, would be pushed back to 2009 because post-production was still in progress.

I was pretty sad about this announcement, but I got over it. Someone else who's disappointed is the film's lead actor, Viggo Mortensen, who discussed the film's delay with AICN.

"My understanding is that they know that they’ve got a story that a lot of people want to see, because of the book," he said.

"And, I think that they are really aware of the fact that they’ve got one chance to do it, and if there’s any little things that they still want to work on a little more, to get it just right, whether it’s the music--I don’t know what it is--a variety of things, they want to do it right."

Yeah, Viggo's right. Let them have all the time they need. After all, we want it to be perfect right? The delay sure is disappointing, but we have plenty of other exciting flicks coming up that will help us reduce the wait.

So... Did they say when the projected release date may be? I'm assuming 1st quarter 2009, but I didn't know if they were shooting for a specific month?

Not yet,

They may wait until the summer movie season start, or they may plan for way earlier. They want to hit a good time frame, but have not announced a final date yet. Too bad...

Will the movie be released to theaters or only on DVD? I wish it would be released in theaters. What do you think?

Hey Jane,

Yes the movie will definitely be released in theaters. Watch out for it sometime between April and June. I think that's what they are looking at right now.

Hoping for a 1Q relase... The book is so dark, disturbing - rather fitting to be released during a winter month

I heard it had soft release in New York and got bad bad reviews -- any news, I'm anxiously awaiting!

A desolate, desolate book that I cannot get out of my memory. Haunting, but in a very humanistic way. I think the times we were and still are in the midst of are so devastating to so many potential movie goers, the powers that be behind this film are waiting and hoping things are on the upswing in our country by Fall. If economic conditions are not better, then releasing The Road the same month as Halloween may, in some mogul's mind, soften the blow of the apocalyptic theme. I can't say I loved the book by any means, but I admire its writing and the human spirit as portrayed by The Man is unsurpassed. He is the best in all of us. Maybe having Barack as President makes this book/movie more bearable?
