Universal to develop ‘In the Heights’ adaptation

After the astonishing worldwide success of “Mamma Mia!,” Universal is gearing up for the next big-screen adaptation of a Broadway musical: “In the Heights.”

Variety says the studio has already acquired the rights to develop the film, which Quiara Alegria Hudes will adapt.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical’s creator and lead actor, is attached to reprise his role onscreen.

The story of “In the Heights” is set in an upper Manhattan neighborhood, where a grocery store owner, who plans to use the money he inherited from his grandmother to close his business and move to the Dominican Republic.

“In the Heights,” which debuted on Off Broadway in 2007 and quickly made the transition to Broadway, ended up winning four Tony Awards.

Well, considering “Mamma Mia!” brought in $558.8 million for Universal, I certainly understand the studio’s excitement to produce another musical. But remember: “In the Heights” is definitely not as popular as the ABBA-inspired show.
