Spielberg, Smith consider ‘OldBoy’ remake

I really like and respect Steven Spielberg; I really do, but his latest idea to remake Chan-wook Park’s phenomenal “Oldboy” worries me.

According to Variety, DreamWorks is trying to secure the rights to develop the remake, with Universal on board to distribute the flick.

And now get this: Will Smith is in talks to star as the lead character. Now, I don’t have anything against Smith at all, but playing an enraged man who goes on a killing spree to seek revenge? I don’t know.

Anyway, the fantastic original film followed a man who’s kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years without any explanation. When he’s suddenly released, he’s given a chance to eliminate those responsible for his misfortune.

“Oldboy” captivates audiences and critics worldwide, earning the Grand Prize of the Jury at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

Whatever happens with this remake, I doubt they’ll make it as violent and brutal as the original. We’ll see what happens.
