Adam Shankman spills 'Hairspray 2' details

I'm sure by now you've heard that Adam Shankman is already working on a sequel to his 2007 hit musical "Hairspray," which pulled $118.8 million domestically.

Shankman recently talked to EW, revealing that the writing process for the follow-up is about to begin. "We just got an outline and some ideas from John Waters, and now we're going out to writers," he said.

Apparently, the plot will center on Tracy Turnblad and her friends as they sing their way through the late '60s. "That period was superpolitical," Shankman told EW.

But wait, there's more. Although details remain under wraps, Shankman also said Zac Efron's character Link will somehow become involved in the British Invasion.

Whatever ends up happening in this thing, I personally don't need a sequel. Plus, John Travolta recently announced he may not even want to return as Edna Turnblad.

What do you think? Ready for round two? Or not at all excited about this? Let me know by leaving your comments below.

Well, personally I am a huge fan of all the individual "Hairspray'" shows. I think John Waters is a phenom. So IF John writes it I am all for it. They can do a lot of positive with it message wise. I hope they develop the relationship between Penny and Seaweed and Link and Tracy. John Travolta is who he is. As for him saying he doesn't do sequels he DID do one in his Get Shorty/ Be Cool thing. So there! Seriously any sequel always has potential. Lethal Weapon was a huge sucess. I hope they do not skimp on the budget and bring the originals back. Adam is very in tune to the dance and songs. I hope he brings Anne back to work with the dancers. My daughter could even be cast as Tracy and Link's kid because she is a huge Hairspray fan at age 2! Kidding there but she does look like them. So anyhoo...Let's hope people don't royally screw up this movie and stay true to the messages. Here is hoping Adam does the diary he did for the first movie again. I really liked it. he is so star struck which is kind of cool because he actually appreciates what he does. So rambling aside bring the original cast back as much as posible and maybe a couple new faces and have a roaring good time. My son is autistic and he LOVES the movie for all the singing and dancing. especially Tammy, Amber and Shelly. He wants to be Link. He is 7 going on 25. So please if nothing else make it great for him!
