The folks over at Johnny-Depp.org have posted what they claim is the first image of Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland."
I have to admit this is quite an extravagant picture, but the more often I look at it, the more interesting it looks. After all, we're talking a Tim Burton film here.
For this reimagining of "Wonderland," Burton uses a mix of live action and performance capture. Mia Wasikowska, Anne Hathway, Helena Bonham Carter, Matt Lucas and Crispin Glover co-star.
The flick is currently shooting, but it won't be ready that soon; Walt Disney plans to release it in 3D in 2010.

that so doesnt look like him and its really scary
I love it! Really Tim Burton. I'm a huge fan of Disney's Alice in Wonderland, ans I just said to my mum: you can make quit a scary movie of the story. A few days later my sis told me about this movie. I'm very curious! It's just a shame they use Anna Hathaway. And too bad I have to wait a bit longer before it coes to Holland!
Walt Disney?! Jesus, they figured out a way to reanimate his head?
omg johnny depp plays all the crazy-makeup-weird-storyline characters...i love him! like, sweeney todd, jack sparrow, edward scissorhands...the makeup on those characters is so nuts but when i found out he was playing the mad hatter, i died. i love johnny depp, he's so damn sexii <33
Johnny looks like he's channeling David Bowie circa 'Man Who Sold the World' and 'Aladdin Sane'! I quite like his ginger nob!!
that is extremly creepy this movie could be rated pg 13 for scary content
Oh, God NO.
I hope to God that this is fake. I'm tired of Burton's goth crap. Alice in Wonderland has the potential to be amazingly trippy but at the moment this is looking like its going to basically be like sweeny todd with the alice in wonderland characters except in 3d
@ bill, pretty much all of burtons films are "goth crap", its what makes him unique, what makes him on of the most outstanding film makers out there!
if you dont like "goth crap" then dont watch it, and take your flaming somewhere else!
dude its like willy wonka in drag...tim and johnny are a badass team i looking foward to this
Making yet another adaptation of "Alice" for the big screen is a HUGE challenge, because we are all highly familiar with the story and the imagery but I hope that Tim Burton's version is more than decent, hopefully a classic because if it's not then I guess he better not bother to mess with the Alice world anymore or even thinking of making a secuel.
Oh this has really great potential but i'm a little concerned about the whole Walt Disney part. Tim Burton usually makes these deep, dark, creepy yet amazing movies and if Tim Burton is directing as usual i don't see how Disney would be at the head of a movie like that.
Scary. A fusion of Willy Wonka and Sweeny Todd wth just a trace of Ziggy Stardust. Burton I can see, but Disney you say? Honestly, this must be a hoax.
I think this looks amazing. Tim Burton is famous for his slightly gothic style and its amazing. The whole Disney thing just makes it alot more interesting and puts a slight twist in the outcome :] Johnny Depp looks immense!
Well....It's so creepy, and I love it. I don't see how Disney can be able to release it, they'll be some angry parents, saying how they don't want their kid's view of the story in messed up by some strange 3D version of Sweeney Todd mixed with Willy Wonka...
I think everyone flaming needs to chill out, because we don't evne know if this will be how he looks in the end, costume and makeup can change overtime. This might just be a makeup test, who knows? Second, I think it looks pretty interesting, and indeed quite shocking, not what I was expecting, but it is intriguing, and I believe that this movie is going to be great!!! Any parents who have problems with the movie, then the solution is simple... just DON'T take your kids to see it!!! lol
Honest to goodness.
Half of the people here opinionated towards liking and anticipating the film (mainly because of Johhny Depp), and the other half doesen't have a countable opinion- seeing as they dislike Tim Burton (just watch it for the concept then!!)-Tim Burton is a rather good director, and if you don't agree, then you just don't appreciate the entertainment industry.
I personally think that this film is worth all the fuss people have made about it, and quite frankly, Johnny Depp looks pretty damn cool.
Totally agree with Trippy In Wonderland. Personally im a big fan of burtons work etc, but even if he wasnt directing it i would still be excited about the movie :]
Why in heavens should "Alice in Wonderland" be another Hostel?
You can be creepy and crazy and dark - and you still don't need to put
a two million dollar messy "moneyshot" how the red queen gets "rid" of the
big rabbit. (Think french revolution here).
I can totally see how you can make this a baseline creepy PG-12 family
fun with a pg-16 dvd release with the extra crazy scenes.
Go Tim Go! Make this awesome as usual :)
:D
this makes me very happy.
ily Mr. Burton
ily Mr. Depp
i am pretty sure nightmare before christmas is also put out under disney...
Remember, Disney gave us the Pirates trilogy so there's hope yet.
Is this for real? Wow, Disney gone gothic. Can't wait to see a ride for this one in Disneyworld. They should squeeze it between Cinderella's castles and the Playhouse Disney train.
Wow. Just wow.
I hope everyone who is like, "how can disney be behind this...it's scary and ruining Alice in Wonderland!" know's that the origional story written by Lewis Carol was written when he was on shrooms and Disney made it "appropriate" for children. But it's still the one Disney movie that it, apperently, better if you're high.
He looks insainely mad. Which is how the Mad Hatter is supposed to be!
what ever he ends up looking like in the movie even if its bad im positive he'll make up for it with a great performance. I really dont care what he looks like thats not the part im excited about , i mean johnny depp as the mad hatter ? he gonna freaking rock that role!
wow this is great! i love this. It will be amazing to see this cartoon disney transform to a dark tim burton. i will deff. go see it in theaters!
-The Best of Luck TB!
:)
"i am pretty sure nightmare before christmas is also put out under disney..."
I'm pretty sure it was Touchstone Pictures when it came out in 1993. (Though it says Walt Disney Pictures in the opening credits on the new DVD.) Just thought you ought to know.
Anyway, this looks completely photoshopped to me, to be honest... It's like Edward Scissorhands' face, with messed up colouring, placed on a random photo.
Regardless this movie WILL kick ass.. (Unless it's like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory *shudders* )
Oh I take back saying the Touchstone thing. Touchstone is an alternate film lable that belongs to Disney ; it realeases movies with more mature themes than Disney...
lol
sorry
XD
The thing that scares me the most is that tim burton is probably going to have to tune it down(because of disney). I would love to see alice in wonderland as creepy as possible and i beleive burton is the only one that can do that
Its underwhelming. i hope it turns into a trippy cult type of a movie. but its burton so it will be a cult film by his fans. i must say, i've never been a fan of his, the only movie i enjoyed was big fish which was strange but had a somewhat normalcy to it. the goth look of this turns me way off. i know it's a style he likes to film, but it just looks TOO out there for me. before i make final judgments i'll wait until the movie release comes close, but for now, the tim burton stylishness is a big turnoff.
oooh, it looks totally nuts. i can't wait to see it. johnny and tim make the most amazing films together.
Lewis Carroll was not on shrooms when he wrote the books, but he (along with a significant number of other Londoners at the time) partook of a little thing called laudanum--which was basically opium and booze mixed together. The point is this: he mixed imagination, incredible intelligence (read "The Annotated Alice") and the freedom of an informal children's story to come up with something truly memorable. I'm almost certain he could have done it without any intoxicants. Burton might hit it out of the park, or it might miss its mark, but I give him credit nevertheless for trying to take it back to the source material.
mannn, its shocking to look at for the first time, but it kinda grows on you after looking at it for a couple of minutes.... its pretty impressive : )
im sick of johnny f****** depp and f*** tim burton his goth emo shit go f*** your ugly f****** wife helen b.carter something cool 10 years ago nightmare b4 xmas isnt cool now leave caroline alone -----kevin smith is boss bitches
Tim got his start as an animator for Disney, and it seems he has always had a good relationship with them. Disney has been branching out to a more broad range of films like Pirates and National Treasure. I'm sure this film will be PG. Just look at other Burton classics like Beetlejuice, Nighmare, and Corpse bride. They are all great films that are PG and my 3-yr-old daughter loves them to boot!
Gjeeeezus, wake up all you sceptic fools! If there's a mistake disney ever made, then it's Hanna montana, zack and cody, and all of those rubbish "childfriendly"shit... This is actually a very good addition to their collection. I mean COME ON! If you had the choice: "Remake Alice in wonderland," Or "Hanna montana goes nuts in hollywood, Again". What would be the best alternate?
Give them a chance to get out a trailer at least before you judge it!
alice in wonderland is the best kids book ever it`s about time they made it abit more adult and dark. johnny depp as the mad hatter and matt lucas as tweedle dee and tweedle dum pure genius
all right look johnny depp is absolutely amazing, tim burton is a genius, and helena bonham carter is wonderful. and anyone who disagrees can go suck it!
Okay, to start off, Spank, if you already know you hate Burton and Depp then why bother coming to this page?
Personally I love Burton, Depp, Bonham Carter, and Rickman. I've yet to see a Tim Burton movie that I didn't enjoy in some way. I'm way excited for this movie. Alice in Wonderland was one of my favorite movies growing up, and as I got older I realized how f-ed up it was for a child's movie. I've also noticed the potential it had for a great more adult movie.
Actually, what many of you call flaming is simply a negative response to the first impressionable picture of the movie and if you think that the one and only acceptable response is to shower it with rosepetals and hate the naysayers then you're living about 60 years in the past.
YES. i can't wait to see this, it looks awesome. and what a great cast!
:]
there has only been one tm burton movie that should never have been done in my opion(williy wonka)every ting eles he has ever touched has turned into gold.An besides tim and disney work together all the time so whats the differance.tim is anawsome director with an outrageous cast behind him and i for one am looking forward to seeing his spin on my all time favorite movie .oh yea an for all the nay sayers have any of you read throught the looking glass you dont really get much darker then that.Anyways rock hard tim cant wait to see it
This doesn't look real...its probably a fake. Plus, where did this picture come from? WHO KNOWS!
This picture cannot be of the Mad Hatter. There is no way Tim Burton would take out such an important detail from the hat. He does not have the 10/6 number's on it. Which Tim Burton would have to be incredibly stupid to leave out such and important detail. If it actually is a picture of the Mad Hatter, then Tim Burton and the costume designers are going to hounded for that important missing element.
This is going to be one of the greatest movies ever! Johnny depp really pulls off the Mad Hatter, & being a Tim Burton film you'll be interested the whole time. It's going to be awesome, i can't really wait a whole year to see though.
I'm afraid!
