‘Quantum of Solace’ kills box office competition

Marc Forster’s James Bond adventure “Quantum of Solace” stormed the North American box office Friday with an estimated $27 million in ticket sales.

The 22nd official installment in the popular series easily beat the $14.7 million opening day gross of its predecessor “Casino Royale,” heading toward an impressive three-day total.

At No. 2, DreamWorks Animation’s “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” collected $8.1 million, reaching a domestic total of $89.9 million after only one week in release.

David Wain’s comedy “Role Models” finished third Friday, earning $3.7 million and bringing its total haul to $30.1 million. Disney’s “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” picked up another $1.3 million for a cumulative gross of $79.8 million.

Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood’s drama “Changeling” ranked fifth with $1.2 million, lifting its domestic total to $24.6 million after a solid four-week run.
