Franck Tabouring Steven Soderbergh is known for frequently switching genres, and his latest project is one that should surprise you: a rock ‘n’ roll musical about Cleopatra.
Oh yeah, you definitely read right. Variety says Soderbergh is currently trying to get Catherine Zeta-Jones to stars as the lead character and Hugh Jackman to play her lover, Marc Antony.
Rock band Guided by Voices wrote the music for the film, with James Greer penning the script. Greer also co-wrote “Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector.”
The trade also says the project is set at a $30 million budget.
Soberbergh’s next film to open in theaters is the two-part project “Che,” which premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. He also recently wrapped “The Informant” with Matt Damon.
Currently, Soderbergh is working on the low-budget “The Girlfriend Experience,” a film about prostitution told from the perspective of a call girl.
Final word: I really believe in everything Soderbergh does, but a rockin’ musical about Cleopatra is really a crazy idea. I’m eager to hear more about it.
