This week in theaters: 'Max Payne,' 'Sex Drive'

Here are the wide releases for Friday, Oct. 17, 2008: "Max Payne," "W." and "Sex Drive."

MAX PAYNE

Who's in it? Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Beau Bridges, Chris O'Donnell, Ludacris

What is it about? Max Payne is a maverick cop--a mythic anti-hero--determined to track down those responsible for the brutal murders of his family and partner. Hell-bent on revenge, his obsessive investigation takes him on a nightmare journey into a dark underworld. As the mystery deepens, Max is forced to battle enemies beyond the natural world and face an unthinkable betrayal.

Excited? It's rated PG-13, so that's pretty bad. That said, the trailer looks gorgeous, and I strongly believe in Mark Wahlberg. I've never played the game before, so I can't say I'm overly exicted about this one. But as long as the script doesn't suck and the action delivers, I'm game. This one could score big at the box office.

W.

Who's in it? Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Banks, James Cromwell, Ellen Burstyn, Thandie Newton, Toby Jones

What is it about? W. takes viewers through Bush's eventful life -- his struggles and triumphs, how he found both his wife and his faith, and of course the critical days leading up to Bush's decision to invade Iraq.

Excited? Kind of. I'm particularly interested in how Brolin handles his character. Other than that, I am eager to see how satirical the film really is. Early reviews don't look all that good, however.

SEX DRIVE

Who's in it? Josh Zuckerman, Amanda Crew, Clark Duke, James Marsden, Charlie McDermott

What is it about? Eighteen year old Ian finally gets the opportunity to lose his virginity when a woman he meets on-line offers to have sex with him if he drives to Knoxville to meet her. Accompanied by friends Lance and Felicia, whom Ian has a thing for, but she in turn has a thing for Lance, take off on a road trip in Ian's brother, Rex's beloved 1969 GTO -- without permission of course.

Excited? Not at all. The trailer for this one looks terrible and laughs seem to be scarce. As a University of Tennessee student I think it's cool Ian heads to Knoxville, but that's pretty much the only fun thing about it. Given its R rating, I doubt it will attract large audiences.
