Seen on: January 2, 2008

Edition: Standard Edition

The players: Director: Michael Davis, Writer: Michael Davis, Cast: Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti, Monica Bellucci, Greg Bryk, Jane McLean

Facts of interest: Mr. Smith kills 100 men in the film and uses a total of 18 different guns.

The plot: Mr. Smith (Clive Owen) protects a baby and a prostitute from a maniac (Paul Giamatti) who wants the kid dead at any cost.

Our quick thoughts: The film failed to target a large audience in theatres, but "Shoot 'Em Up" is absolutely necessary on DVD. Thrilling and action-packed for full 93 minutes, the film supplies its audience with non-stop violent shoot-outs, fantastic stunts and sacrastic humor. Although the story is way to implausible to be taken seriously, Michael Davis has created solid characters, with Clive Owen shining as the hero with a badass attitude. His ruthless oponent, played with glorious enthusiasm by Paul Giamatti, is the epitome of a dirty nasty killer, stopping at nothing to complete his mission. Fans of hardcore action and brutal violence will love this flick for its inventiveness. The bonus material on the DVD includes original animatics, a filmmaker's commentary and a making-of featurette.

Freaky quote: "I'm a British nanny, and I'm dangerous" - Clive Owen

The final word: Fast-paced and at times seriously hilarious, "Shoot 'Em Up" is an action extravaganza combining freaky stunts with a fair dosage of dark humor. Heck, the film even makes a great statement about gun control. Aim for the DVD, rest your brain, and watch out for the bullets...
