The players: Director: Paul Thomas Anderson, Writer: Paul Thomas Anderson, Cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Mary Elizabeth Barrett, Paul Dano, Dillon Freasier, Christine Olejniczak
Facts of interest: Based on the novel "Oil!" by Upton Sinclair.
The plot: Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a powerful oilman who despises his competition and usually gets what he wants, at least until he discovers a whole ocean of oil under the territory owned in part by a local priest (Paul Dano).
Our quick thoughts: Although "Blood" is unlike anything Paul Thomas Anderson has ever done, the movie is a timeless masterpiece. Backed by a compelling script, solid direction and a beautiful cinematography, the film is a gripping tale about revenge, greed, oil, religion, family, betrayal and deceit. Daniel Plainview will go down in film history as one of the most ruthless monsters ever to have been brough to life on the big screen, stopping at nothing to get what he wants and enlarge his massive oil empire. In what is likely the best performance of the decade, Daniel Day-Lewis plays Plainview with unique enthusiasm and a frightening sense of reality. His striking performance will shock as well as fascinate you for days.
Freaky quote: "There are times when I look at people and I see nothing worth liking." - Daniel Day-Lewis
The final word: Undoubtedly the best film of 2007, "There Will Be Blood" is a nail-biting experience you will want to watch over and over again. The violence depicted in the film may at times be hard to swallow, but it's Plainview's monstruous character that is really frightening. A masterpiece indeed!
