The plot: The plot: In 2054 Paris, the government has been replaced by an all-seeing corporation seeking complete power. When a young female researcher is kidnapped, an austere police captain takes the case, uncovering much more than a kidnapping gone awry.
Our quick thoughts: "Renaissance" is a film that truly stands behind the definition of its title: the incredible and complete revitalization of animation. The movie is almost entirely done in black and white, plunging the viewer into a world of beautiful darkness. The animation is sharp and sleek, producing dazzling visual effects for a very original future setting. While the animation creates an incredibly unique presentation, the base of the story line resembles a classic, film noir detective caper. As the plot evolves it becomes clear that this is not your average gumshoe thriller, but rather a bold look into a dark future where things are not at all what they seem.
Freaky quote: "Without death, life is meaningless." - Ian Holm
The final word: This film truly is a visual masterpiece, taking the comic book appeal of "Sin City" to the next level. Volckman has created an incredible vision, and he has done so with unique style. Although the acting is not the best and the plot is strained at times, "Renaissance" remains a sleek and smart animated film that pleases the eye as well as the mind.
