Facts of interest: This is Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s third collaborative motion picture (“The Beach,” “28 Days Later”).

The plot: The sun is dying and the fate of mankind relies solely on the mission of one ship and its crew.

Our quick thoughts: Director Danny Boyle again teams up with writer Alex Garland for a truly euphoric sci-fi thriller. Boyle’s incredible direction creates a magnificent spectacle of Garland’s original story. For those judging this film solely by the plot synopsis, it's not a shallow, clichéd “Armageddon”-type blockbuster. “Sunshine” is a film that delves into the meaning of creation and destruction, of humanity and the circumstances that require the sacrifice of humanity.

The acting is top-notch for the most part, with Cillian Murphy ("28 Days Later") and Rose Byrne starring in leading roles that create believable and in-depth characters. The stunning cinematography and visual effects work hand in hand with the musical score to create a truly captivating experience that will keep you both terrified and mesmerized all the way to a blinding cinematic climax.

Freaky quote: "Total light, it envelopes you. It becomes you.” – Cliff Curtis

The final word: With "Sunshine," Danny Boyle has crafted one of the best science fiction films in recent years. This is a thriller that will stay with you long after it is over, enveloping your mind in its bold explorations and sheer magnificence.
